The question is "How do I pack and move my piano?"
Piano cannot be moved like other pieces of furniture, you cannot organize a piano moving party and have some friends to grab a corner then slide it down the stairs onto the back of a hired truck.
One of the best tips that can be given about moving pianos is ‘Do not consider it, get the experts in’; we are those experts, we are professional movers. Pianos come in several different shapes and sizes; probably the most common is the upright piano followed by baby grand’s then concert grand’s. Pianos have to be moved carefully, they have many intricate parts with a case equal to a nice piece of furniture. We have moved many different pianos in various different circumstances. To coin a well used phrase a piano should be ‘treated like a lady’.
If we have not managed to persuade you not to move your piano then here are a few pointers that you should bear in mind now you have decided to do it yourself.
Make sure all helpers wear gloves; there should be at least three of you but preferably four, one for each corner and you should be able to access the piano from all angles; having plenty of space around it is a must. Do not push it too far on the little wheels; they are not designed for that type of use.
The lid needs to be secured in place and preferably locked; protecting the casing is important as you do not want to spoil its appearance. It is suggested you use specialist cushioned moving blankets and plastic sheeting to protect it.
If there are four of you then place one on each corner, if three then two should be at the heavier end and one at the lighter end. The construction of the piano includes a heavy iron framework which is heavier at one end than the other.
When you start to lift the piano, think of yourself and apply general safe lifting rules, bend your legs and keep your back straight. Whilst lifting bear in mind the pianos legs are generally decorative and not weight bearing so cannot take a lot of strain; your legs are stronger.
Moving a piano is not, and should never be, a quick process; take your time moving it, just a few feet at a time. Do not allow the casters to take all the weight so lift the piano so no excess strain is placed on them.
Keep the following in mind whilst moving the piano; do not move the piano sideways just from front to end, do not put too much weight on the front legs, a dolly is very useful when moving it especially when negotiating the ramps into the back of the truck.
Finally, the piano needs to adjust to its new surroundings and will need to be tuned, as no doubt the move would have caused it to go out of tune. If you have a baby or grand piano keep the lid closed when it is not being used.
